The Story before

This is Strensall’s only dedicated sports facility, situated at the end of Durlston Drive. The facilities included tennis courts, full size and mini football pitches and a damaged MUGA plus swimming pool when the car park flooded – which was frequently!

Inside / Outside as it was!

The building had changing facilities, toilets, a meeting room and kitchen but no heating or hot water or windows – many local residents were not aware that it even existed!

Our Vision

Strensall Community, Youth and Sports Association was formed officially in February 2012 by a group of six trustees who work closely with the Parish Council, York City Council existing and future user groups. We are a registered charity which has applied for grants and funding for the refurbishment of both the building and the sports facilities.

Year One

In year one we refurbished the MUGA, with a grant from the army Community Covenant.  We also carried out drainage work to the car park and replaced the kitchen. In July 2013 we held a very successful Gala Day that was supported by the Parish Council and local community and the sun shone. We held a “design a logo” competition at Robert Wilkinson School and with the generous support of a Nestle graphic designer created our new logo.

We also saw the addition of:

    • 9v9 pitch for football
    • Tennis courts available for pay and play
    • Successful Tennis open day held over Easter
    • 2 Netball teams trained over the winter

Year 2

We are now making the facilities more usable, by altering the interior space and increasing the community room size and a larger kitchen.  This will make the available space for large events and joint activities involving partner organisations.  The increase in storage and room size will bring the community facility into use from local clubs on a regular basis, e.g. Brownies, Cubs etc.

The building has been refurbished to provide a large function room which can accommodate 60 persons.  There is also a large full fitted kitchen including a range cooker, fridge, freezer, microwaves and dishwasher.

With the new refurbishment of building, we hope to increase user groups as we offer more facilities for community, sport and leisure groups. We hope the center will become a ‘home’ base for sports teams in addition to existing football, netball and tennis users.  All ages are welcome.

If you think you have a group that could use the facility please let us know. If you would like to join the management committee or have skills and experience you could offer we would appreciate your input. Or if you want to know more about the charity you can do here. Find out more about SCYSA.

Long Term Plans

Our vision is to create:

“A vibrant place, full of activity, offering excellent facilities to benefit the residents of Strensall and surrounding neighbourhoods.”
